Fanny Mendelssohn - Piano Trio in D minor Op. 11
Robert Schumann - Six songs from Dichterliebe arranged for clarinet, cello and piano
Johannes Brahms - Trio for piano clarinet and cello in A minor, Op. 114
Sarah Thurlow (clarinet) Clare O’Connell (cello) Iain Farrington (piano)
Join us for an afternoon of sublime romantic music for clarinet trio:
Fanny Mendelssohn’s trio, written for her sister and originally scored for violin cello and piano, is given a new life in a version which bursts with passion and energy, showcasing her incredible skills as a pianist, and which also contains moments of pure lyricism reminding us of her talent for song.
Alongside we play perhaps the greatest work written for clarinet trio by Johannes Brahms, a monumental and emotionally rich piece that mixes intimate fantasy with heart-on-sleeve passion.
"It is as though the instruments were in love with each other."
And interspersed are six songs from Robert Schumann’s great work Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love), a hothouse of nuanced responses to the delicate language of flowers, dreams and fairy tales, which have been especially arranged for this concert and which are filled with love and longing.
